The assistant

Butter AI, more than just another chat app.

An AI assistant that's ready for your DM, or to be tagged in another conversation you're having. It can run your workflows, update your doc and that reconstructs what a message is actually about before answering through our ConvoFabric technology.

In short

  • Butter is pinned above your conversation list and has its own direct message.
  • Tag it with an at mention in any conversation and it replies without joining that conversation.
  • It reconstructs context by following replies, quotes and related messages in both directions.
  • It can propose running the workflows you allocated to it, and waits for approval.
  • A conversation in private mode excludes it completely.

What is Butter?

Butter is the AI assistant built into HumanIn.Ai chat. It has a pinned direct message, and it can be pulled into any other conversation with an at mention. It answers questions, and where you have allowed it, it proposes running one of your own workflows and waits for you to approve the inputs before anything executes.

Tagging it does not add it to the conversation. Butter replies as a guest and leaves, so a group chat does not quietly acquire a permanent member because someone asked a question once.

Replies arrive as thread replies under the message that summoned them, which keeps the main transcript readable when several people are asking things at once.

Context

It works out what you are talking about.

Most assistants read the last few messages and hope. Butter walks the conversation's link graph in both directions: upstream to find what a message is responding to, and downstream to find everything that piled onto the same topic afterwards.

  • Explicit links first: the thread it sits in, and any message it quotes.
  • Related messages found by a background pass that runs seconds after each message.
  • Downstream as well as upstream, so a topic that branched keeps all its branches.
  • Every hop stays inside the same conversation, and deleted messages are skipped.
  • If the walk finds nothing or fails, it falls back to the plain thread rather than erroring.

Built in

What it can do without your workflows.

Answer questions about the platform

It can look up how a feature works and where a page lives, so "where do I see failed runs" gets an answer rather than a guess.

Read the replies under a message

Ask about something further up the conversation and it can open that message's replies to see how the discussion actually went.

Check the weather

Current conditions and a forecast up to fourteen days out, falling back to the location saved on your profile when you do not name one.

Remember where you are

It can save your location to your profile, but only after asking. This is the one built-in tool that puts a confirm button in front of you.

Control

Where Butter is not.

An assistant in a chat product is only acceptable if there are places it cannot go, and if those places are obvious.

Private mode locks it out

Switch a conversation to private and agent mentions are stripped on the server. Butter cannot read it, cannot be tagged into it, and cannot reply in it. The compose box says so instead of offering it.

One conversation at a time

Every hop of the context walk filters by conversation, so a message id from somewhere else cannot pull foreign content into a prompt. Reads run as you, under your own permissions.

It never joins uninvited

An at mention gets you a reply, not a new member. Butter answers as a guest in conversations it does not belong to.

One reply, never two

A message matches at most one agent, and the two reply paths are split by membership, so tagging it in its own direct message cannot produce a double answer.

Questions about Butter

Which model is behind it?
The platform runs on Claude with automatic fallback to Gemini if the primary is unavailable, and the choice is made by configuration rather than by you. The practical effect is that a provider having a bad afternoon does not stop your assistant answering.
Does it stream its answer?
No. The typing indicator tells you it is working, then the reply arrives in one piece. Nothing is lost by this, but it is worth knowing it is not a token by token stream.
Can it see images I send?
Yes, images in the conversation are prepared for it to look at. Images that come in through the wider context walk contribute their caption text only.
Can it run one of my workflows?
Only the ones you allocated on the agents page, and only by proposing it and waiting for you to approve the inputs. See agents and tools.
Is it available on the phone?
Yes. Butter is the app's default conversation, and a reply or a proposal from it sends a push notification.

Ask it something.

Butter is pinned at the top of your conversation list from the first time you sign in. It costs nothing to test what it does with a question about your own work.

Free plan. Private conversations stay private.
