What can you do in the mobile app?

Most of the day to day. Start a run from a form, approve or reject one that has parked with its output editable first, and use chat in full including threads and images. You also get live workflow status and your account. What stays on the web is the building: the canvas, the node builder, the run history and the Library.

The app is not a viewer you check on things with. Almost everything that stops work moving is a small action someone has not taken yet: a run nobody has approved, a run nobody has started, a question nobody has answered. Each takes under a minute, and none of them need a canvas.

So the split is not desktop for the real work and mobile for glancing. It is building on the web and running on both. You can put a whole day's worth of decisions through the app and never open a laptop, right up until you want to change how a workflow is wired.

What you actually open it for.

Answering someone, starting a run and approving one are usually the same errand, done in that order. You can move between them without losing what you were part way through, so a half typed reply survives the trip to go and check whether the run actually failed.

  1. Someone asks about a run in chat, and you answer them without leaving the app.
  2. Start a workflow from the status tab, filling in its inputs on a form.
  3. A workflow pauses, you get a push, and you approve it with the output edited.
  4. Check what is running and what failed before you get back to your desk.

Questions about the app

Is there an iPhone app?
Not yet, Android has shipped and iOS is coming by the end of August.
What gets me a notification?
Three things. A message from a person, a reply or a proposal from Butter, and a workflow run parking for review. Tapping any of them opens the exact item, even if the app was closed. While you have the app open you get the in-app update instead of a banner.
Can I start a workflow from my phone?
Yes. The status tab carries the same trigger form as the web, with one labelled field per input, and it posts to the same place. A run you start from the app is an ordinary run, and it appears in the history like any other.
Can I edit the output before approving on my phone?
Yes. Markdown output is editable with a formatting toolbar, and structured output is editable field by field. It is the same review you would do at a desk.
Can I change what the assistant is allowed to run?
Yes. Tap Butter anywhere in chat and its details sheet has the same tool switches as the agents page on the web, writing to the same place.
Why can I not build a workflow on the app?
Because a graph canvas with drag connections is a poor fit for a phone, and a bad version of it would be worse than none. Until we find an easy and intuitive way to do so, we will not be bringing workflow editing to app.
